Barriers To Exercise For Older Adults

Despite recommendations from health authorities that all adults should accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days, many older adults fail to reach this goal.

There are numerous genuine barriers to exercise among older people, including personal issues such as pain and discomfort, fear of injury and social isolation. Environmental issues such as a lack of exercise facilities and problems with climate also have an impact. Most of these can be overcome but before describing how, it's important to describe the barriers in more detail. Only then will we understand why they prevent exercise being a normal part of the lifestyle of an older person.
