Blood Pressure High Among Young

High blood pressure is typically something we associate with our middle-aged and older years, but research has revealed it is a growing concern for children and adolescents, too.

What is high blood pressure (hypertension)?

Blood pressure is a measure of the force exerted by the blood against the walls of arteries. When you have your blood pressure taken it is recorded as two numbers; the systolic pressure, the upper reading (as the heart contracts), over the diastolic pressure, the lower reading (as the heart relaxes between contractions). A blood pressure reading of 120/80 mmHg (millimetres of mercury) is expressed as '120 over 80'.
