Immunising kids: how it works and why it’s important

Keeping kids happy and healthy is a top priority for parents and protecting them from serious diseases is a big part of that. With kids back at school where they encounter a range of new experiences (and germs) we explain how childhood immunisation works and why it’s important.

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way of protecting children – and adults – against harmful diseases that can cause serious health problems and sometimes death. It works by using the body’s natural defence mechanism – the immune system – to build resistance to specific infections and helps us stay healthy by preventing serious infections. Immunisation copies the body’s protective response to diseases, helping the immune system detect and destroy infections before symptoms can occur.
