Emotional stress can contribute to risk factors for heart disease and trigger symptoms in people with established heart disease. With this in mind, we discuss some stress management strategies to help protect your heart.

Stress and your heart

The way you manage stress can influence your risk for heart disease. Research suggests that people who have a tendency to become angry or irritable in response to stressful situations may be at greater risk. In one study of young men, those who responded to stress with anger were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease – particularly a heart attack – at an earlier than average age.
