Teen Smoking Suicide Risk

A Finnish study has made the disturbing finding that boys who are regular smokers by age 14 are more likely to attempt suicide by the time they are 34.

Dr Kaisa Raila and her colleagues from the Olou University Hospital analysed data from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register to link suicide attempts with data gathered from questionnaires on smoking at the age of 14. In a study of 5,034 males they found that 2.6 per cent of daily smokers at age 14 had committed suicide by age 34. In comparison, only 0.8 per cent of those who had experimented with smoking and 0.4 per cent of those who had never smoked had committed suicide.
