Understanding antidepressants

Depression is a serious condition affecting many Australians and is commonly treated with antidepressants, with Australians being the second biggest consumers of antidepressants worldwide. With medication use on the rise, we look at treating depression and the role of antidepressants in helping people recover.

Did you know depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide? Or that in any one year, around one million Australian adults have depression? It’s hardly surprising, then, that the use of antidepressants is on the rise, with a 2013 OECD report finding Australia is the second-biggest consumer of antidepressants in the OECD after Iceland. Meanwhile, a separate study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry found that between 2000 and 2011, antidepressant use in Australia increased by 95.3%. And with close to one in 10 (8.9%) of Australians being prescribed antidepressants, it’s important we understand more about the medication and what it is used for.
